Two schoolboys have been charged for allegedly assaulting and raping a six-year-old girl at a primary school in Sydney.

The boys, both 12, are accused of assaulting the girl in a toilet block at their primary school during breaktime last month.

They were arrested and suspended from school when police were alerted by the girl's parents a week after the incident took place, according to Eyewitness News.

The girl was reportedly assaulted twice over two consecutive weeks. The first time only one boy was allegedly involved, while his friend is accused of being involved in the second alleged assault.

A police statement said: “Detectives from the State Crime Command's Child Abuse Squad were alerted by the Department of Education following incidents at a primary school.

“Following an extensive investigation, two boys, both aged 12, were arrested at Chatswood Police Station on Tuesday August 30.

“Parents and carers of students at the school are in the process of being notified and police request the community respect the privacy of the young people involved.”

One of the boys has been charged with four counts of aggravated sexual assault and two counts of sexual intercourse with a child under 10.

The other boy was charged with two counts of aggravated sexual assault and sexual intercourse with child under 10.

Both have been released on bail and are due to appear in a children's court later this month.
