Azerbaijan's parliamentary speaker, Isa Gambarov, resigned yesterday, deepening the government crisis and clearing the way for a return to power of the former Communist leader Geidar Aliyev, AP reports from Baku.
Mr Gambarov stepped aside under pressure from a rebel commander, Surat Huseynov, who has seized several towns in eastern Azerbaijan in opposition to the conduct of the war over Nagorny Karabakh. Mr Huseynov is demanding the removal of President Abulfaz Elcibey and the cabinet.
