Bujumbura (Reuter) - Gunfire and the boom of grenades blasted the capital of Burundi, Bujumbura, as night fell yesterday, 24 hours after three Belgians and two government soldiers were murdered in an ambush.
The Prime Minister, Antoine Nduwayo, said he would give no toll for Sunday's attack, to avoid scaring people. A Belgian doctor said eight Belgians in a convoy of three cars were returning late to Bujumbura when they came under fire at Nyamutenderi. The driver of the lead vehicle, Etienne Waltzing, stepped out to show the gunmen he was white but was killed by a bullet in the head. Waltzing's girlfriend, Corinne Salle, was then shot dead and her four-year-old daughter Jazmin was murdered by repeated shots into her chest.
