The top Democratic and Republican contenders for the former Senate seat of the Treasury Secretary, Lloyd Bentsen, advanced to a run-off in a special election in Texas on Saturday. AFP reports from Austin.

The Democrat Bob Krueger hopes to remain in the job given to him by the Democratic Governor, Ann Richards, in January, following Mr Bentsen's appointment to head the Treasury.
