PEKING (Reuter) - The standing of China's paramount leader, Deng Xiaoping, has received a fillip in the period before a Communist Party congress.

The People's Daily yesterday reported the publication of a book that apparently elevates Mr Deng to the level of Mao Tse-tung. The paper notes: 'Mao Tse-tung and Deng Xiaoping On The Chinese Condition' contains 88 articles - 64 of them by Mr Deng and 24 by Mao. Images of Mr Deng have also started appearing around China.
