Breast boost

(First Edition)

TAIPEI (Reuter) - Taiwan will ban television advertisements for infant formula food to encourage breast-feeding, it was announced yesterday.

The island's three television stations have been ordered to stop showing such commercials from April. Radio and print advertisements will be discouraged although health authorities have no legal means to punish violators, a Department of Health spokeswoman said.

According to surveys, fewer than 10 per cent of Taiwanese women breast-feed their babies. Infant formula importers and domestic manufacturers spend pounds 8m on advertising annually.
