STANGER, SOUTH AFRICA - The Zulu Chief Mangosuthu Buthelezi defied his king's ban on Shaka Day celebrations to speak to a crowd of 10,000 yesterday. 'I believe that the day of King Shaka should not be used for any party political wrangling or point scoring,' he said. Zulu King Goodwill Zwelithini had ordered the festivities cancelled and broke off relations with his 65-year-old uncle after supporters of Chief Buthelezi's Inkatha Freedom Party stormed the royal residence last week. Chief Buthelezi, speaking in place of the 45-year-old king, effectively claimed victory over his nephew and said the celebration was the biggest in decades. ANC officials said Chief Buthelezi had contradicted his call for Zulu unity by going ahead. Reuter
