MOSCOW - The leader of the breakaway Chechen republic escaped an assassination attempt that killed his interior minister, Magomed Eldiyev, Russian news agencies said yesterday. Mr Eldiyev, his deputy and their driver were killed when a roadside bomb exploded as the presidential convoy was passing by outside Grozny on Friday night. President Dzhokhar Dudayev was unhurt, Itar-Tass and Interfax said. AP
