The Chinese now claim credit for masterminding the defeat of the French army by the Vietminh at Dien Bien Phu in 1954, AFP reports from Peking. An article in the China Daily says the mass attack was the brainchild of Wei Guoqing, then commander of the 'Chinese military advisory group' in North Vietnam.
