President Bill Clinton yesterday chose George Tenet, acting director of the CIA, to be the new head of the troubled agency, and to take charge of the entire $30bn (pounds 18.8bn) United States intelligence establishment. White House officials said that Mr Tenet, 44, was chosen by the President two days after Anthony Lake withdrew his candidacy in exasperation at delays in his confirmation by the Senate Intelligence Committee amid pounding by Republicans over his failures in the current fundraising scandal..
