BRUSSELS (Agencies) - Zaire's national conference decided to give the country back its old name - the Republic of The Congo.

The conference also changed the name of the south-eastern province of Shaba back to Katanga and agreed to bring back the country's former national emblem and anthem. The conference's decisions are binding on President Mobutu Sese Seko, but Mr Mobutu said a referendum would have to be held.
