BRAZZAVILLE (Reuter) - Pascal Lissouba, a geneticist and former Marxist, yesterday became Congo's first democratically elected president since independence from France. But his rival Bernard Kolelas immediately contested the result, saying there had been vote-rigging.

The national electoral commission said final results showed Mr Lissouba, 61, had won 61.3 per cent in Sunday's vote, compared to 38.7 per cent for his anti-Communist rival. Mr Lissouba had been tipped for the presidency since last week winning the backing of the Congolese Labour Party, the former single party.
