Latest data suggests several countries may soon be removed from UK travel corridor

Only a handful of countries remain exempt from the UK's coronavirus quarantine rules (The Independent)

Six new countries and territories have been removed from the UK’s coronavirus “travel corridor” list.

From 15 August, anyone arriving from Aruba, France, Malta, Monaco, the Netherlands or Turks and Caicos Islands will be required to self-isolate for 14 days or face a hefty fine.

It means that only a small selection of countries remain exempt from the UK’s quarantine rules – and the latest data suggests that even some of those could soon be removed from the safe list.

Measuring countries by the number of new daily coronavirus cases as a proportion of their population size shows just how well a country is coping with the Covid-19 pandemic compared to other countries.

In late July, France was level with the UK by this metric but is now seeing more than double the number of new cases relative to its population. Its removal from the list came with just 30-hours notice, prompting a "nightmare" mass exodus from the country by holidaymakers.

The latest data reveals that several countries still on the UK’s travel corridor list have also seen a recent surge in new cases.

After avoided a serious peak on its first wave of Covid-19 infections, Australia has since seen a significantly worse second wave.

It overtook the UK but the number of new daily cases have begun to drop in recent days. If this trend continues, travellers arriving from Australia should continue to avoid quarantine restrictions.

The fate of Greece is less certain, having seen a massive surge in new cases since late July.

The country recently overtook the UK and continues to see its infection rate rise.

A similar situation can be seen in Poland, where there are now an average of 19 new cases per million people compared to 14 new cases per million people in the UK.

It is also worth noting that the UK’s coronavirus travel corridor is not always two-way. Some countries, such as Japan, have their own quarantine measures in place for travellers arriving from the UK – ruining any hopes of taking a holiday there.

• Brunei (added 11 August – if you arrived in England from Brunei before 11 August, you will need to self–isolate)
