LUXEMBOURG (AP) - European Community fishing ministers yesterday barred EC tuna fleets from using special nets that kill dolphins along with the targeted tuna catch in areas where the two live together.
EC fleets use nets that close like a purse to catch tuna in the Indian and Atlantic Oceans, where tuna and dolphins are not found together. Yesterday's measure was preventive in case EC fleets adopted a practice used by others in the Central and East pacific. There, fishermen seek out dolphins because they know tuna swim beneath them.
