San Jose, Costa Rica - Alberto Dahik, who resigned as Ecuadorean vice- president on Wednesday night, has requested political asylum in Costa Rica. Mr Dahik fled Ecuador to avoid arrest after the Supreme Court ordered his apprehension on charges of embezzling $485,000 (pounds 310,000) of public funds. Mr Dahik, the architect of Ecuador's free-market programme, has denied the allegations. Reuter
