Eight Islamic militants and two policemen died in a gunbattle in the southern Egyptian town of Edfu on Sunday night, Reuter reports from Cairo.
Gunmen believed to belong to the fundamentalist el-Gamaat el-Islamiya attacked a police station and shot dead one policeman. They then fled in an open- topped car but were stopped by police at a checkpoint. Police shot dead three in the car and killed the other five as they tried to escape through fields. A policeman also died in the shootout.
