Colombian police said yesterday they shot dead Pablo Escobar's military chief, Mario Castano, in Medellin, dealing a heavy blow to the city's drug cartels, Reuter reports from Bogota.

The killing of Castano, apparently in a Medellin office after betrayal by an informer, was a setback to expectations that Escobar would surrender in days or even hours, as his lawyer said earlier.
