Police rushed to the Bromma secondary school after receiving an initial report at 12:08 p.m. (11:08 GMT) that a stabbing had occurred, but they instead found a boy had been shot in the throat, spokesman Ulf Goeranzon said.

The man suspected of doing the shooting was detained by police a few blocks from the school and taken in for questioning. His identity was not released, and police would only say that he was in his 20s.

"The investigation is in a sensitive stage, so we won't comment on the motive," police spokesman Mats Nylen said in a television interview.

Students and staff assembled in the main hall of school in western Stockholm to receive counseling shortly after the body was found, then were sent home for the afternoon as investigators examined the scene.

Police cars and ambulances lined up around the school, located in the western Stockholm suburb of Bromma. All media were asked to leave the scene after a student reportedly jostled with news photographers outside the hall, the Swedish news agency TT report.

Officials at the school, which has 70 teachers and 900 students, were not available for comment. A taped message at the school switchboard referred callers to the police.
