ROME (Reuter) - The spectre of political chaos in Italy receded yesterday after the Prime Minister, Giuliano Amato, survived a crucial no-confidence vote in parliament. Mr Amato's shaky coalition, facing the stiffest test of its seven-month life, won with a 66-vote margin after two days of debate.
Had Mr Amato lost his government would have been forced to resign and the austerity and privatisation plans on which Italy's economic reputation depend would have been sidelined.
