A founding member of the Basque police force was shot in front of his young son and critically wounded, Reuter reports from Bilbao.

Jose Antonio Goikoetxea helped set up the Basque country's autonomous police force, Ertzaintza, in 1982 and was a leading figure in the moderate Basque Nationalist Party (PNV).
