The German opposition Social Democratic Party, which did poorly in the European elections, made a dismal showing in municipal elections in Munich and lost control of the town hall, AFP reports from Munich.
The big winner was the Christian Social Union, the Bavarian sister party of Chancellor Helmut Kohl's Christian Democratic Union, with 35.5 per cent of the votes. The SPD, which controlled the town hall in coalition with the Greens, won 34.4 per cent, its worst performance since 1948.
