Lorena Bobbitt went on trial yesterday for severing her husband's penis in an assault her lawyers said was prompted by repeated beating and rape by her ex-Marine husband, Reuter reports from Manassas, Virginia.

Mrs Bobbitt's lawyer said Mr Bobbitt's penis became a symbol of the 'reign of terror' forced on her, and cutting it off was an act of escape.
