ROME - The Christian Democrats, in government for 50 years and facing oblivion in March's elections, split yesterday when dissidents walked out to form their own party, Reuter reports.

The breakaway group, which called itself the 'Christian Democrat Centre', split two hours before the rump Christian Democrats relaunched themselves as the Popular Party to mark a break with the past.
