Rome - Bettino Craxi, the Italian Socialist leader and former prime minister, was formally told yesterday he is under investigation for corruption, writes Patricia Clough.

He reacted with characteristic toughness, declaring his innocence and blaming it on a 'well-orchestrated campaign' against him.
