Body of newborn baby found dead on Dublin beach

Police are urging the baby's mother to come forward

An investigation is under way after the body of a newborn baby was found at a Dublin beach. (Google )

The body of a newborn baby has been discovered on a beach in Ireland.

Police say the discovery of the dead child was made in Balbriggan in Co Dublin shortly before 10am on Saturday.

The main railway line between Dublin and Belfast runs along the side of the beach.

The sex of the child is currently unknown.

An investigation has been launched and the scene is currently sealed off.

Authorities have also raised concerns about the wellbeing of the baby’s mother and are urging her to come forward.

A Garda spokesman said: "We are concerned for her safety and health given what she has gone through."

A post-mortem examination is due to be carried out in the coming days and the force would not speculate on cause of death until that was complete.

Posting on Twitter, Fianna Fáil senator Lorraine Clifford-Lee said: "I'm distraught to learn of the discovery of the body of a baby on Balbriggan Beach today.

"I'd appeal for the mother to come forward for medical treatment. You'll be treated with compassion."
