Herzogenrath - A gunman held eight hostages at a savings bank in Germany yesterday and demanded DM2m ( pounds 822,000) in ransom.
The man, wielding two hand guns and possibly hand grenades, was holed up in the bank in the town of Herzogenrath on the Dutch border. He seized 17 bank employees and customers but freed nine of them with his demand for a ransom and an escape vehicle. Police said they still had no direct contact with the gunman several hours after the crisis started. Reuter
