Seven people have been jailed for life for an attack on an engagement ceremony in Turkey last year which killed 44 people.

The court in the Anatolian province of Corum jailed an eighth man for 15 years.

In the attack on 4 May, masked men carrying automatic weapons stormed the ceremony in the village of Bilge, in Turkey's mostly Kurdish southeast, killing the betrothed couple, the imam presiding over the ceremony and many guests. The dead included six children and three pregnant women.

Authorities at the time blamed the attack on a family feud, but court officials have said the motive for the attack could not be established.

Four other suspects were acquitted.
