BERLIN - German guards on the border with the Netherlands turned back some 200 would-be asylum-seekers from the former Yugoslav republics, earning Bonn a sharp rebuke from The Hague, writes Adrian Bridge.

The refugees, who flew into Maastricht on Wednesday, were refused entry, an action described by the Dutch justice ministry as 'inexplicable'. More than 72,000 refugees from the former Yugoslav republics applied for asylum in Germany in the first six months of the year, the interior ministry said yesterday.
