German seeks mercy in Iran

Germany said it expected Iran to pardon Helmut Szimkus, a German engineer after the Iranian Supreme Court upheld a death sentence against him for spying for Iraq, Reuter reports from Bonn. 'We will certainly be telling the government in Iran that it is in their interests to pronounce a pardon,' a government spokesman said. 'There can be no doubt that sentiment . . . with respect to Iran will suffer if the sentence is carried out.'
