The Dutch and Belgian navies plan to merge their headquarters to save money, a Dutch navy spokesman, Reuter reports from The Hague. The two will combine in Den Helder in the Netherlands under the command of a Dutch officer. The Dutch are already pruning their navy and plan to shed a third of their 20,000 seamen by 2001.
