MOSCOW (AP) - President Vytautas Landsbergis of Lithuania criticised Mikhail Gorbachev's reported call for Russian troops to remain in the Baltic states. 'It turns out that Gorbachev, who used to be a reformer, now speaks as an outright imperialist,' Mr Landsbergis said in a statement.
The Finnish newspaper Vasabladet quoted Mr Gorbachev as saying that Russian troops stationed in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania 'stabilise the situation and guarantee the security of the Russian minority'.
