Grim-faced Hurd tells Washington British peace-keeping troops could be pulled out of Bosnia

THE Foreign Secretary, Douglas Hurd, indicated yesterday that Britain might withdraw its peace-keeping forces from Bosnia if the various combatant parties continued to evade a negotiated settlement in the hope of securing further gains on the battlefield, writes Rupert Cornwell. Mr Hurd told a press conference in Washington that no decision had been taken, and that London would only act in concert with France and other UN countries with troops on the ground. The decision would not be 'isolated or irresponsible'. He also urged greater US involvement in the peace process. 'It's going to have to end with a negotiated settlement,' Mr Hurd said.
