Russian generals vowed to keep out of politics as President Yeltsin faced calls from his inner circle for 'tough measures' to halt a conservative onslaught by the Soviet-era parliament, Andrew Higgins reports from Moscow.
Mr Yeltsin's spokesman, Vyacheslav Kostikov, said members of the Presidential Council had urged 'presidential rule' to stop an alliance of Communists and nationalists. Presidential rule could mean Mr Yeltsin by-passing the Congress of People's Deputies and the Supreme Soviet.
