An American surfer is thought to have broken the record for riding the highest wave in the world.

Garrett McNamara caught the reportedly 100ft wave off the coast of Nazare in Portugal and experts will now have to verify the new record.

It is believed that McNamara has broken the record he set back in 2011 when he rode a 78ft wave at the same spot.
