SOFIA (Reuter) - A Bulgarian prosecuter demanded a 10-year jail term for the ousted communist dictator, Todor Zhivkov, on trial on embezzlement charges. Mr Zhivkov, 80, is charged with embezzling 26.5m leva (then pounds 15m) from public funds to buy palatial apartments and Western cars for his family and favoured Communist aides.
The Bulgarian government will return a quarter of land confiscated by the Communists four decades ago to its rightful owners by the end of the year, Agriculture Ministry officials said yesterday.
