NAIROBI (AFP) - A villager wrestled a man-eating lion to the ground and strangled it to death after the beast attacked cattle in a remote southern Tanzanian village.

Tanzanian national radio, monitored in Nairobi, said that the people of Muchoteka village, in the Tunduru district in the south of the country, had slaughtered goats for a feast to celebrate the bravery of Ahmed Ponela, a farmer.

Wildlife officials in the Tanzanian capital, Dar es Salaam, estimate that lions have been responsible for the deaths of more than 80 people in the south of the country in the past six years.
