PALERMO (Reuter) - The trial of the Mafia 'boss of bosses', Salvatore Riina, accused of ordering the 1977 murder of a police official, was adjourned as soon as it opened yesterday when he failed to appear.

The court president announced that Mr Riina, who was arrested lat month, had not been transferred to Palermo from Rome for 'security reasons'.
