Nelson Mandela, the ANC leader, said he wanted an urgent meeting with President F W de Klerk to find ways of stopping spiralling violence in black townships near Johannesburg, AP reports from Johannesburg.
In the latest clash, police waged a gun battle with blacks at a funeral procession in Katlehong township. Police said they stopped a van in the procession and found automatic rifles and hand grenades, then came under fire from the crowd and shot back, killing three blacks and wounding three more. Residents said police opened fire without provocation.
