The French Communist leader, Georges Marchais, yesterday bade farewell to the party he led for 22 years, acknowledging it had been a bitter period of errors and decline, Reuter reports from St-Ouen. He told the Communist Party congress that world upheavals had cost French Communists dear but better days lay ahead for a renovated party.
