Shots were heard as a man reportedly attacked a military barracks in Belgium.

The masked attacker is on the run after he rammed the fence of the barracks in Flawinne in an attempted car bomb attack, local media reports.

The newspaper La Derniere Heure said officials suspected there may have been a bomb in the car.

The suspect's vehicle was found abandoned in nearby Belgrade.

Bomb disposal experts have been sent to examine the car.

Pictures of the scene show a black car, which appears to have driven through a fence into a muddy field.

Flawinne is home to one of Belgium's major military barracks, where the 2nd Commando Battalion are based.

Belgian officials said no one was injured in the attack.

Defense Cabinet chief Lieutenant General Claude Van De Voorde said: "One car tried to get into the barracks. There was one person in the car. He fled."

The perpetrator has reportedly been arrested.
