Milan train crash: Two dead and more than 20 injured after high-speed train derails
Carriages came off tracks in early morning, authorities say
Two people have been killed and scores injured after a high-speed train derailed near Milan.
At least two carriages and the front engine came off the tracks, video from the scene shows.
Images shared by emergency services show the train toppled over after it crashed around 5.30am (local time) near Lodi, a town in northern Italy
Two train drivers were killed in the crash, according to the head of the national civil protection unit.
Twenty-seven people were left with non-life threatening injuries.
The carriages were not very busy at the time of the crash as it was the first high-speed Freccia Rossa train of the day, according to local media.
There were only 33 people onboard when it derailed while travelling around 300 kph (180 mph), according to authorities.
Angelo Borrelli, the civil protection unit leader, said the service had left central Milan just after 5am and was heading south to Salerno, a city near Naples, when it crashed.
He told state radio that the state-railway train went off the rails, striking another train on adjacent tracks in the countryside near Lodi.
The cause of the crash is under investigation.
