Paris cybercafes raided in shoebomber inquiry

The Paris prosecutor's office opened a judicial inquiry into Richard Reid, the man accused of trying to blow up an aircraft with explosives hidden in his shoes, and investigators have confiscated computers from Paris cybercafés he visited.

The inquiry into a possible charge of "criminal association in relation to a terrorist enterprise" would cover anyone suspected of having acted as Mr Reid's accomplice, officials said.

Mr Reid, 28, from London, was arrested after he allegedly tried to touch a match to his sneakers during an American Airlines Paris-Miami flight on 22 December.

On Friday a judge in Boston ordered Mr Reid to be held without bail, saying he was a risk to the public. Mr Reid is charged with interfering with a flight crew through intimidation or assault, which carries a maximum 20-year sentence. The FBI has indicated that additional charges are likely.AP
