Polish and Jewish leaders expressed hope that they had laid the foundations for a new and better relationship at a joint commemoration of the 1943 Warsaw uprising, Reuter reports from Warsaw.

President Lech Walesa of Poland, the Israeli Prime Minister, Yitzhak Rabin, and the US Vice- President, Al Gore, laid wreaths in front of a huge granite monument depicting the heroes of the uprising. Poles living in the large apartment blocks surrounding the monument put lighted candles in their windows to show solidarity with all victims of the Nazi Holocaust.
