The Pope fractured his shoulder joint and a dislocated his shoulder when he tripped on the hem of his robe and fell down the steps of the papal throne during a Vatican audience, Reuter reports from Vatican City.

The Pope, 73, was taken to Rome's Gemelli hospital and given a general anaesthetic to correct the dislocation. He will have to wear a soft cast for about a month.
