ROME (Reuter) - The Pope, looking thinner and paler, left hospital for a period of convalescence, 13 days after undergoing surgery to remove a benign intestinal tumour.

After thanking the doctors who operated on him on 15 July the 72-year-old Pope was taken to the Papal summer retreat at Castelgandolfo in the Alban Hills south of Rome, where he is expected to spend at least one month resting.
