Rifkind urges US to support Bosnia troops increase
NEW YORK - Malcolm Rifkind, the Secretary of Defence, yesterday urged the United States to support an increase of UN troops for Bosnia and to 'throw its full weight behind the peace process to which the US and the Europeans have already contributed so much', writes Peter Pringle.
The UN Secretary-General, Boutros Boutros-Ghali, has requested an increase of 8,250 in the Bosnia force, but so far the US has supported only a lower figure of 3,500. In a speech to the Carnegie Council on Ethics and International Affairs, Mr Rifkind also endorsed Mr Boutros-Ghali's idea of a standby force of troops for the United Nations.
