Rudolf Scharping, president-elect of Germany's opposition Social Democratic Party, announced he would run for the chancellorship next year against Helmut Kohl, AFP reports from Bonn. Mr Scharping made the announcement after his only rival, the SPD's deputy president, Oskar Lafontaine, said he was dropping out of the race.
