Rome's chief prosecutor is to begin preliminary investigations into the origin of rumours of a political crisis which hit Italian markets on Friday, Reuter reports from Rome.

Mr Ciampi called for legal action after share prices plunged and government bonds fell due to rumours that the President, Oscar Scalfaro, was on the verge of resigning.
