Russia fires first submarine missiles against Isis targets in Syria
The missiles used are capable of carrying nuclear warheads.
For the first time since launching their bombing campaign in September, Russia is now attacking Isis targets in Syria using submarine missiles.
Russia's Ministry of Defence have released footage of the first submarine missile strikes which took place on Tuesday.
According to the Russian Defence Minister, Sergei Shoigu, Kalibr cruise missiles were launched from a Rostov-on-Don submarine and successfully hit two “terrorist positions” in Raqqa, about 160 kilometres east of Aleppo.
The video above shows at least four missiles being launched; these missiles are also capable of carrying nuclear warheads.
"As a result of the successful launches by the aviation and submarine fleet, all targets were destroyed," Mr Shoigu said, adding that oil infrastructure, ammunition depots and a mine-making factory had been hit in the strikes.
During the last three months Russian authorities claim they have conducted thousands of airstrikes in Syria, destroying over 7,300 Isis targets.
