A teenage boy was killed when two coaches carrying British children on half-term ski holidays were involved in a freak motorway pile-up in Germany.

A British man, believed to be the assistant driver of one of the coaches, also died and 28 people were injured in the crash near Cologne yesterday.

The shocked children - from schools in Norwich and Framlingham, Suffolk, - were heading back to the UK tonight, accompanied by medical staff and a police escort. One pupil was carried on board his coach on a stretcher.

Tributes were paid to the dead boy, Stuart Dines, 14, a pupil at one of two unconnected schools each heading for a skiing holiday in Austria.
